7 Ways to Spring Detox

Happy second day of spring!

I love spring; definitely one of the best seasons. Spring reminds me of “new life.” New life with the spring harvest, longer days and a brighter, calmer, fresher outlook! It reminds me that brighter things are always close by.

Spring is also the time of year when our bodies naturally crave lighter foods. Many people will do a “detox cleanse,” which I’m not opposed to, but I tend to stay away from. To me, a detox cleanse can be done any time of the year: get the additives and preservatives, added sugars and all other gut irritants out of your diet and that’s all the detox you likely need.

Instead of enduring the typical 10-30 day detox cleanse, how about just creating your own spring detox? No major slumps or suffering will be involved. Make over your foods and overall lifestyle to compliment the real spring detox you want.

Here are my top 7 ways to Spring Detox

  1. Kick the sugar. Sugar looms everywhere, and you would be surprised how quickly the amount of sugar you consume daily adds up. Sugar isn’t just “sugar.” It is also called things such as: white sugar, cane sugar, brown sugar, confectioner’s sugar, invert sugar, raw sugar, beet sugar, turbinado sugar, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, dextrin, honey, maple, evaporated cane juice, malt, molasses, dextrose, fructose, fruit juice concentrate, glucose, maltose, etc. Start your day with Orange Juice? Even a lower sugar one like this has 10g sugar/serving. And you haven’t even had your cereal, toast, jam or muffin yet! I will be talking about sugar in great detail over the next several months, but kicking your sugar habit is a great place to start. (And by the way, I’m 37 days in on no sugar. You can still join me!)
  2. And then kick the “fake” sugar. Most fake sugars are dirty chemicals – yes, dirty chemicals. They include words like: saccharin, sucralose, aspartame. Did you know that many places in the world ban these fake chemicals? Just look at “Bad Guy #1: Aspartame.” It’s hard to give this one up, especially when we are pre-programmed to understand that they are “fat free and sugar free” and the healthy alternative. Try nixing them.
  3. Just say “yes” to natural food coloring. I know that’s it fun to decorate and eat cupcakes with pretty blue or pink food coloring. But this is another chemical that could really stand to get the boot from your kitchen. Scientists have been warning against food colorings! I recently found my natural “green” food coloring with Spirulina, but I’m on a mission to find many other natural colorings. I think this is a great article to get started: 8 Ways to Make Organic Food Coloring.
  4. Food Intolerance. This is a tough one, since many of you might not even know you are food intolerant. I didn’t…..for years! And for years I just masked it with antibiotics and the thoughts, “oh well, I guess this is just how my stomach is supposed to be.” All of that would eventually downward spiral to Colitis, more drugs and then a huge awakening. So what did I do? How did I start? I took the natural approach and looked to food to be my solution, not my problem. It started with an elimination diet, which you can do, too! Here is some information on an “allergy avoidance diet.” This is an in-depth service I will be providing once I fully launch my Health Coaching business because I believe it’s one of the things that was absolutely critical in my journey to healing. As Dr. Mark Hyman, MD said during a lecture last night, “The gut is always the first place I start when healing my patients.” <- I couldn’t agree more; I’ve been saying this for years now, too!
  5. Move Outside. Now that the weather is getting nicer and the days longer, move more outdoors. This is a double whammy for me because moving is key for a healthy, detoxed body and fresh air is unparalleled. We need the sun and fresh air more than you can imagine. Start soaking it up.
  6. Get it Out. Does coming out of winter have you feeling down and negative? These down-and-out thoughts are likely to leave you feeling less than optimal. Take some time for yourself everyday to journal or vLog or paint or whatever else creatively you need to do to get it out. Bottled up thoughts and emotions are as much a drag to the immune system as many of the foods we clutter it with.
  7. Add Them In. If all else fails, just add in some great, new items to your diet. Try any or all of these: anti-inflammatory Omega-3 fats (ie. Wild Alaskan Salmon), fruits, vegetables, cayenne pepper, turmeric, SuperFoods and more SuperFoods, nuts and seeds, probiotics, cinnamon, ginger and greens!

Your turn: What are your favorite ways to spring detox?

I never meant to start juicing, blending and eating more vegan foods. It just sort of happened.

The first thing that happened was the realization that yes, even with a bum tum, you can get in so many of the nutrients you need via fruits and vegetables….and unless you are going through a flare up, you are likely to not be in pain. But, but, but…..not so fast. For many people with digestive issues, in order to do this we need to:

  1. focus on healing the gut
  2. while the gut is healing realize that you likely need to “prep” your foods differently than “normal” people (ie. soak in water, blend, grind and juice)

The second thing that happened was a crazy-awesome session with David Wolfe where I became a fanatic over supernutrion and more supernutrition.

The third thing that happened was I knew I was definitely in the market for a Vitamix. But I still haven’t gotten one. So I’ve gotten really good at combining: my Breville juicer + my little, baby Bella Cucinas + my KitchenAid and finally my good old smoothie blender.

And just like that….the transformation happened. And when it worked, and by worked I mean my digestive system has been moving constantly and energy levels through the roof compared to the prior two weeks (even when I’m on tons of meds currently), the habit was formed!

Now, I simply can’t get enough. The best part? This is so easy! My goals:

  • facilitate easy
  • indulge in delicious
  • top-quality foods, whole and unprocessed at least 90% of the time, healthy lifestyle and supernutrion
  • a digestive tract you will learn to really, really love <– and that’s my TOP mission

Alright, so with that, another recipe for you all to try. I made this on St. Patrick’s Day. I, of course, had my Vegan, Gluten-Free Au Natural Shamrock Juice Turned Dessert, but we had some leftover sweet potatoes in the fridge that needed to get used up before they went bad. I put my creative hat on and came up with this:

Sweet Potato & Greens Super Soup

Ingredients
  •  unsweetened almond milk
  • drizzle raw honey
  • sweet potatoes
  • kale
  • spinach
  • 1/2 tsp spirulina
  • cinnamon
  • mint
Directions
  1. Place all ingredients in a blender.
    1. Remember, for most things I don’t give ingredient quantities. This is why, if you need a reminder. That being said, I gave specific quantities for the spirulina. But even that, adjust if you’d like! Remember, it’s yours, not mine.
    2. I probably used about 1/2-1c. unsweetened almond milk.
    3. The potatoes were de-skinned, and I used about 2. (skin can be hard to digest – but I’m a huge fan of the skin, so use it if you can tolerate it). They were also cold. We had made them a few days back in the oven.
    4. I only used a drizzle of honey.
    5. I used a couple heaping handfuls of spinach and kale.
  2. Blend until you are able to puree and then liquify (don’t liquify for too long, though).
  3. You can eat this cold or you can warm it up. I tried it both ways, and enjoyed it both ways.

A Take on New Year’s Resolutions

New Year’s Resolutions. New Year’s Goals. A 2012 Focus.

Call it what you want, but most of you have them or have thought about setting them for the upcoming year. And because the concept of them is real and furthermore real important, the topic deserves attention.

Each month in the Experience Life Magazine, Bahram Akradi (founder and CEO of Life Time Fitness) writes an article. In the December, 2011 issue the article was, “Push Through the Finish.” Mr. Akradi is extremely intelligent, and his words are always thought provoking for my mind, soul and overall character. This article was no exception. I spent several days thinking about and meditating on it. Please read the article now and come back (I linked to it above.) No, seriously….read the article and come back!

After reading and re-reading the article several times, I realized a lot about “New Year’s Resolutions.” New Year’s Resolutions are simply the “beginning” to what we hope will be a beautiful ending – a finish line sprinkled with lights, medal and honor. With these resolutions come:

  1. Success
  2. Process

Success at resolving.

A process to get us to success at resolving.

Success looks different to everyone, but nonetheless we all desire it in some capacity. The article quoted one of Aristotle’s most famous quotes,

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a  habit.

Have you ever noticed that when you create a habit and have success, you are then motivated to continue to re-invent that habit so you’ll find even more success? It’s true, success is due to habit and habit is merely a planned process.

Our New Year’s Resolutions, then, are realizing that we need to put into place better habits and processes into our lives if we are ever going to resolve a problem and reach our goals.

And this is where 99% of resolutions will fall short this year, as they have every other year. A resolution is the final destination – the grand prize. A habit, a process, is an everyday event. If we’re not willing to put in the time, commitment and have the motivation to do the “dirty work,” our goals and resolutions fall short.

But as Mr. Akradi said,

If you can address and overcome it in the pursuit of a single, meaningful goal, you may be astonished at how it transforms other sectors of your experience.

And THAT is where the true power of your 2012 New Year’s Resolution might be. Take the next couple of weeks and think about the ONE, not several, thing you want for yourself for 2012. Focus on it. Envision all the baby steps you can do daily around it.

“Expect resistance, and greet it with excitement when it comes. That’s your opportunity for growth, right there. Nothing succeeds like success, and if you can get closure on even one tiny little piece of your goal today, I suspect you will feel a rush of motivation that will entice you to accomplish another little piece tomorrow, and the next day, and the next.” (Bahram Akradi)

(I told you he was intelligent.)

Remember, it’s not your resolution, goal or focus that matters. It’s making a commitment, forming a process and being inspired to be the best version of YOU today, tomorrow, in 2012 and every year that is yet to come!

Question: Do you have a New Year’s Resolution, goal or focus?
