I went to New York this past summer, and met so many wonderful new people. One of my favorite “meets” was Kathryn Moos. I was introduced to Kathryn from my friend Marissa Vicario (which, by the way, check out her site – you’ll love it!) I knew Kathryn and I would hit it off immediately when I quickly learned she was from the homeskillet Minnesota, an athlete and played ice hockey.
The more I learned about her, the more I adored her.
Kathryn, like myself, is an entrepreneur. She is the founder of VROU, which is a Multivitamin drink for women (and actually a product Ms. Gutsy would endorse)!
Here is her story….
Early morning workouts. Training table breakfasts. Late morning practice. Training table lunches. Afternoon yoga. Training table dinners. Early to bed. And repeat the next day. The life of a professional athlete is one whose success is predicated on routine and the ability for that person to get their body and mind to peak physically during competition. Why isn’t that true for the rest of us? What gets in the way from behind our desks and keeps us from routine and from getting our mind and body to peak during the competition within the marketplace? These questions caused one me to search deep inside.
Two years ago, I left my job and set out to transform and simplify the way women get nutrients. And this summer, I launched our first product, VROU, a Multivitamin drink with Electrolytes and Antioxidants that came as a result of life’s prior experiences. As a professional athlete, I had access to some of the best nutrients available. Always full of energy, hydrated, and nourished, I never felt healthier. I had to be, or my performance would suffer.
After retiring however, and working as a financial analyst in NYC, I found myself yawning more often. My morning runs became slower. I couldn’t do as many pushups or pull-ups. And my overall energy level just wasn’t the same. I knew part of this feeling came from me being constantly dehydrated because drinking water all day was about as boring as the numbers I was crunching. (I later learned that over 76% of Americans are chronically dehydrated!). I guess I’m not the only one who just can’t get around to drinking more than 9 cups of water a day!!
I was still trying to figure out why I didn’t feel quite as vibrant, especially since I always ate healthy meals. I then heard Dr. Oz claim that up to 90% of the population does not get the necessary daily nutrients from a healthy diet alone and that supplementation is needed. This must be it, I thought, because I never liked taking pills. Swallowing them is a pain if I remember to take them, and when I do, they frequently upset my stomach. This discovery made me think back to my time as a professional athlete, and how the one difference between then and now was that I used to have access to so many products that were nutrient rich.
The problem was that these products were not readily available for the general public. So I left my job in a pursuit to put the most essential nutrients that women need into one bottle (calcium, magnesium, vitamin D, and folic acid). It also contains vitamin A, C, E, K, and vitamins B3, B5, B6, and B12 along with potassium. It gets better! VROU is naturally flavored, uses no artificial sweeteners or preservatives; is ONLY 5 calories with NO SUGAR! The result is something I am very proud of, and a product that Whole Foods’ Northeast Region picked up only two months after I launched. Drinking at least one bottle of VROU every morning when I wake up and having one after my workout has brought me back to feeling like a professional athlete again! It was a long road with many hurdles along the way, but I am thrilled that this is available for any woman to drink.
More so, with the vision to transform the landscape of women’s health, I have a deep rooted passion to empower the next generation of women. For me, playing sports and having the opportunity to express myself in a physical setting, was hugely impactful and has defined who I am today for the better. I want every girl to have this same experience. At VROU, we have partnered with Girls on the Run NYC, a non-profit who uses the power of running to empower and change the way girls see themselves and their opportunities. I want to make a difference with what women drink.
