Integrative Nutrition Mega Conference

In less than a month I will be heading down to the Long Beach area for the Integrative Nutrition® Mega Conference. For me, what’s really mega about this is that I was chosen by the school to be a VIP Blogger during the conference!

Needless to stay, I am beyond excited. Since I share so much about the The Institute for Integrative Nutrition on my site, I thought I’d share some more information about the conference, what I’ll be doing, who I’ll get to hear live and who I’m excited to meet.

The Conference

The conference is a 2-day event filled with speakers and attended by people who have this burning health and wellness passion similar to my own. I was chosen with several other people to live blog the event. And while I’m not 100% sure what it all entails, I do know that it is likely to be similar to other live blogging events I’ve participated in – blogging in-real-time all the awesomeness that the conference will exude. The difference between live blogging this conference and ones I’ve done in the past? I’m so passionate about this that the excitement is really unparalleled.

Who I’ll Get to Hear Live

Here is a great list of the #MEGAIIN Speakers. I can honestly say I’m thrilled to hear each and every single one of them. I have not yet listened to a school lecture that I found “boring.” Each person lights my passion fire just a little bit more. That being said, here are the ones I’m most excited to hear:

Joshua Rosenthal: The Institute for Integrative Nutrition Founder

I’m sure everyone that has ever gone to the school is excited to hear Joshua Rosenthal speak live. He is, after all, the visionary for the school – the founder – and the one who has ignited the flame for people worldwide. He created a school that teaches 100 different dietary theories, and what I probably respect the most about Joshua Rosenthal is that he makes it very clear to students that there is not one diet that fits all. He believes we need to have open minds around different theories, while understanding first and foremost that oftentimes at the “root” of all problems lies a true problem with a Primary vs. Secondary Food. He inspires me daily….from across the country.

David Wolfe: World Authority on Raw Foods

David Wolfe still holds one of my favorite lectures to this day. I was running 9+ miles, listening to David Wolfe and having many ah-ha moments. I’m not a raw foodist now, nor have I ever been a raw foodist. That being said, I learned so much from David Wolfe about raw food. There are pieces to his beliefs and ideas that I completely agree with, and that I would actually incorporate into my own life. He says they call him, “David Avocado Wolfe.” I love that he attached the “avocado” to his name. I’ve been thinking of attaching a simple food like that to mine as well. Maybe I’ll have it nailed down before I meet him:)

I am also looking forward to hearing: Mark Sisson, of Mark’s Daily Apple and the founder of Primal Nutrition, Stacey Morgenstern and Carey Peters, masterminds of Holistic business and marketing (because yes, I will always be a marketing girl at heart!) and Seane Corn, internationally celebrated yoga instructor (because someday I want to do an intense study of yoga.

Who I’m Excited to Meet

Everyone. Yes, really….everyone. With an entire conference full of healthy lifestyle and super passionate people, how can you go wrong?  I will definitely say that I’m excited to meet my own Health Coach from the school, Linda Mandelbaum. She and I have connected in such an awesome way, but she is on the East Coast so naturally I have not been able to meet her face-to-face yet.

I am also looking extremely forward to meeting all of the other #MEGAIIN VIP Bloggers:

FINALLY…..on Saturday night, March 3rd, I got invited to a special staff party with many of the awesome speakers. And…..I get to invite one person to come along with me! Are any of you in the Long Beach area and interested in coming as my guest? If so, please contact me here. I need to finalize my plans by this Friday, February 10th!

I am truly looking forward to spending the weekend in Long Beach surrounded by inspirational and passionate people. Long Beach is such a beautiful place, and I’m looking forward to exploring new scenery and some tasty gluten-free eats! I welcome all suggestions for various exploring and eats in the area!

Baked Bananas & The Integrative Nutrition Book

Bananas are loaded with potassium. They are also very friendly to the digestive system, which is exciting news if you are like me and have Colitis or any other form of IBS/IBD. Why? Because bananas are sweet – pun intended – and can be used in many different recipes or are perfect as a stand alone snack!

The suggestion has been made several times lately that I should think about writing a cookbook. I’ve thought of, “Cooking with Colitis” or something of the like. While it sounds real sexy and fun, I’m not sure writing a cookbook is for me. I have many other things around cooking and baking and truly helping people in need up my sleeve.

But that being said, if I were to write a cookbook, it would have many recipes similar to the recipes in Joshua Rosenthal’s book, “Integrative Nutrition: Feed Your Hunger for Health & Happiness.” Why? Because the recipes are practical. I am tired of cookbooks, websites and blogs that think we all have 22.5 hours in the day to do nothing but cook and bake (though wouldn’t that be fantastic?!).

Not sure what a simple and practical recipe looks like? Most of them on my site truly are. Same with Joshua’s. So go ahead, click the banner on the right side of my site (I will be removing this soon for awhile) OR click on the picture below to download his book for FREE! YES – FREE! ps. Wonder what those containers filled with gluten-free goods are on the sides of the book?! That’s coming soon! I had one heck of a weekend creatively organizing pieces of my kitchen!

Integrative Nutrition Book

This past weekend I made the Baked Bananas (found in the book). They were an awesome dessert for Ryan and I. I hope you will enjoy it!

Ingredients (I halved the original recipe, since I only made it for Ryan and I)

  • 2 firm bananas
  • 1 /2 tsp olive oil
  • 1/2-inch piece grated fresh ginger
  • 1/2 tbsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tablespoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 c. raisins
Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Peel and cut bananas in half, lengthwise.
  3. Oil a baking pan and arrange bananas.
  4. Sprinkle with spices and raisins, cover, and bake for 10 to 15 minutes.

Create Your Healthy Lifestyle

A healthy lifestyle looks differently for everyone. But the core principles to what make up a healthy lifestyle are fairly standard across the board. At The Institute for Integrative Nutrition we learn about Primary Foods and Secondary Foods.

Primary Foods Include:

  • spirituality
  • career
  • physical activity
  • relationships
Secondary Foods Include:
  • grains
  • vegetables
  • fruits
  • oils
  • proteins
In other words “lifestyle” mixed with food, but lifestyle outweighing food. And it makes sense if you think about it. People aren’t unhealthy and overweight because of food. They are unhealthy and overweight because of the underlying issues which lead to an unbalanced relationship with food. And at the core of a healthy lifestyle is bringing these issues and imbalances to the surface.

Make 2012 the year you will create your healthy lifestyle by looking to things other than just food for true results. Understand that you will not change because you know you should, but instead you will change because you desire to.

Focus on your lifestyle and those primary foods. Ask yourself questions such as:
  • “Do I overeat because I’m constantly stressed at work?”
  • “Do I eat too little because I’m in a poor relationship, and I’m trying to control at least one part of my life?”
  • “Do I eat junk food 24/7 because I haven’t taken the time to care for myself with physical activity….why start now?!”
Rate where you are now. Rate where you want to be in a year. And make a plan for getting from here to there.
