7 Ways to Include Hemp in Your Child’s Diet
- Straight from the packet. We bring a packet of Nutiva Hempseeds everywhere we go. We also have the larger-sized bag, so I am always getting that out at home and sprinkling it on the kid’s food or just giving it to them to as a stand alone. Yesterday I grabbed a small handful, put it on Isaiah’s high chair tray and he dug right in. Samarah used to do the same thing.
- In smoothies and smoothie bowls. It’s so simple to throw hempseeds into a smoothie or smoothie bowl. Isaiah and his hempseed-smoothie messy mouth. (p.s. Come back Monday when for Gotcha Day when you’ll finally get to meet him!)
- In smoothies and smoothie bowls, part 2. You can throw hempseeds in or on, but you can also use hemp protein in that smoothie or smoothie bowl. This is exactly what I did last weekend with my smoothie bowl. We are getting ready to do a video shoot on that smoothie bowl, so stay tuned to my blog. I’ll embed it once the recipe is complete. That smoothie used the new Nutiva Organic Plant Protein Superfood 30 shake which includes hemp protein, but you can also grab just plain hemp protein (which I love).
- Pre-Packaged Cereal. I never buy boxed cereal because I don’t think it’s necessary. I do, however, make homemade oatmeal for the kids (the Oats, Boats and Bugs recipe). But for Hemp History Week this week, the Media Kit sent to me included Nature’s Path Qi’a Hot Oatmeal. I read the ingredients and was stoked about them for the babies. Samarah dug in immediately to the Cinnamon Pumpkin Seed. Isaiah ate it with her the second time, and the only thing I kept out of his bites were the pumpkin seeds because he still only has his 2 bottom teeth, and I’m always paranoid about choking. For all my mama label readers like me out there, here you go: Organic Rolled oats, Organic buckwheat groats, Organic pumpkin seeds, Organic inulin, Organic chia seeds, Organic hemp seeds, and Organic cinnamon. There are 6 g of protein, only 1 g of sugar and 5 g of fiber. I am going to add these packets to my massive Google Doc Spreadsheet Travel Guide.
- Edible Food Art. I’m not sure about your children, but mine love to play with food. Somewhere on the Internet surely you have seen Hempseed Banana Sushi, right? You don’t need any fancy recipe for this. Just pour the hempseeds out (like I did in idea #1), then slice bananas and let them roll the banana in the hempseed and eat. Samarah helped Isaiah do this yesterday, and they loved it. All hempseeds and banana were gone (but I had a mess to clean up, which was perfectly okay). Bonus: This washes down perfectly with Homemade Hemp Milk.
- O’Coconut Hemp & Chia. These are already in my Travel Guide🙂 They are the perfect alternative to a cookie or other treat. Samarah actually calls them cookies, but they are bite-sized macaroons, essentially.
- Sauteed Veggies. I like to saute veggies in hemp oil then make a bowl of veggies, rice and a meat or fish of some sort for all of us, the babies included. One of Samarah’s current favorites is our ‘Salmon Sunday’ meal which is wild salmon from the local farmer’s market with white rice and then bok choy sauteed in hemp oil.
